Hiking backpacks and daypacks built for Australian trails

A good day pack disappears on your back. It carries what you need for a day out, sits close enough that it does not swing on a descent, moves air across your back on the climb, and holds up to being dropped in the dirt at the end of it.

How to choose a daypack size

For most day walks, 18 to 25 litres is the sweet spot. It takes water, layers, lunch, a first aid kit and a camera without tempting you to carry more than you need. Below 15 litres you are into running and commuting territory. Above 30 litres you are packing for an overnight.

What to look for

  • Ventilation. A channel down the back panel makes a real difference on a hot climb.
  • A hip belt. It moves weight off your shoulders and onto your hips, where you can carry it further.
  • Fabric. Ripstop weave stops a small tear becoming a large one. A PU coating and a water-repellent finish handle a shower.
  • Rain protection. A built-in cover you cannot forget to pack beats one you buy separately and leave at home.

The SURVIVAL Trek 20 Backpack

Our 20 litre pack is made from 600D recycled ripstop polyester and weighs 838 grams. It has a rescue whistle moulded into the hip belt buckle, a high-visibility rain cover stowed in the base, and a hip belt that unclips and wears on its own so you can leave the pack at camp and still carry your phone and keys.

Pair it with a bottle and a first aid kit, or see the rest of the Outdoor Gear range.
