DO YOU NEED MEDICAL TRAINING TO USE ONE
No. A modern AED is built for the person standing closest, not for a clinician.
It talks you through each step, tells you when to stand clear, and will not deliver a shock unless it detects a rhythm that needs one. You cannot shock someone who does not need it.

TIME IS THE WHOLE PROBLEM
Survival from a cardiac arrest falls with every minute that passes before defibrillation.
An ambulance response measured in minutes is a long time in this context, which is why AEDs are now in shopping centres, gyms, clubs and workplaces rather than only in hospitals. The one on the wall is there because it can be reached faster than help can arrive.
CHOOSING ONE
Weight and size matter more than people expect, because an AED that lives in a vehicle or gets carried to a field has to be easy to move.

This is the maintenance that gets forgotten. Pads have a use-by date and batteries have a service life, and an AED with either one out of date may not work when you open the cabinet.

WHERE TO MOUNT IT
Somewhere unlocked, signed, and known. A defibrillator in a locked office that one person has the key to is a compliance decoration.
Tell everyone where it is, and pair it with CPR gear. Compressions start immediately and continue between shocks, so a resuscitation shield beside the AED is worth having.
