The Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice sets out what that looks like in practice, and most states and territories have adopted it. The detail depends on your headcount, your hazards and how far you are from emergency services.

The SURVIVAL Workplace First Aid KIT is nationally compliant with that Code of Practice. The PLUS version adds to it and includes a wall bracket.

LOW RISK VERSUS HIGH RISK

A low risk workplace is an office, a retail floor, a library. The hazards are slips, cuts, burns from a kitchen and the occasional medical episode.

A high risk workplace is a construction site, a workshop, a farm, a factory. Add crush injuries, serious lacerations, falls from height and machinery. The response has to be capable of holding a major bleed, not just covering a cut.

WHERE TO MOUNT IT

Visible, signed, and not behind a locked door.

The most common workplace failure is a compliant KIT in a locked first aid room that one person has the key to. Mount it where the work happens, and if the site is large, mount more than one.

The wall bracket on the PLUS KITs is for this. Two screw holes at the back, screws not included because the right fixing depends on your wall.

WHO IS YOUR FIRST AID OFFICER

Equipment is only half the obligation. Someone has to be able to use it.

Work out who is trained, whether their certificate is current, and what happens on the days they are not on site. Then make sure the rest of the team knows who that person is.

Everything inside the KIT is colour-coded and labelled, which helps enormously when the trained person is the one who is injured.

VEHICLES ARE WORKPLACES TOO

A ute, a van or a truck used for work is a workplace, and it needs first aid equipment the same as a building does.
